RWI/ISL Container Throughput Index: Strong increase in October

The container throughput index of the RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute for Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) rose sharply again to 122.6 in October according to the current flash estimate.

The main results:

  • The container throughput index of the RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute for Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) rose again sharply in October, seasonally adjusted, from (revised) 119.6 to 122.6. It thus reached another all-time high.
  • The value for September has only been revised slightly downwards by 0.1 points compared to the flash estimate.
  • The increase is on a broad basis. Both the Chinese ports and those outside of China recorded a clear plus.
  • The North Range Index, which provides information on economic development in the northern euro area and in Germany, also improved significantly. At 114.1, it is only 1.1 points below the maximum value reached before the Corona crisis.
  • The current flash estimate for the container throughput index is based on information from 46 ports which handle around 70 percent of the throughput shown in the index.

Regarding the development of the container throughput index, RWI economic director Torsten Schmidt says: ‚World trade also developed extremely dynamically in October. The first slump due to the Corona crisis seems to have been overcome. It remains to be seen how the recent restrictions on economic activity to contain the pandemic will affect international trade.
