The 91 ports included in the ISL Container Port Monitor achieved a cargo handling result of around 43.8 million TEUs in July this year; a decrease of 2.7% compared to July 2019. Compared to the previous month, a 6.4% increase was achieved though. This was the second highest increase this year after the March results. However, the economic impact of COVID-19 continues to hamper global supply chains.
A look at the July results shows that only the ports in Africa and Oceania included here were unable to match their previous month's results. The very positive results of the ports of Northern Europe and North America are particularly striking. Compared to the results of July 2019, however, it is more than clear that the overall economic situation has not yet reached the level of the previous year.
The Container Handling Index of the RWI - Leibniz Institute of Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) also indicates, according to the last flash estimate in August, with an increase to 116.1 points, that the resurrection of world trade is slowly gaining breadth.
