IMO secretary-general wins nod to stay on for a second 4-year term
THE Council of the
International Maritime Organisation
Council (IMO) have backed the re-appointment of Kitack Lim as secretary-general for a second four-year term that is due to begin on January 1. The appointment still requires the approval of the IMO Assembly in December.
Prior to assuming the role at the IMO, Mr Lim was president of the Busan Port Authority, a position he assumed in July 2012. In March 2011 he was named a commissioner of the Korean Maritime Safety Tribunal.
He was elected chair of IMO's Subcommittee on Flag State Implementation in 2001 and of the Tokyo Memorandum on Port State Control in 2004. Two years later, Mr Lim was appointed director general of South Korea's Maritime Safety Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, reported American Shipper.
Later as a senior maritime attache at the Korean embassy in London, Mr Kim led all IMO work for South Korea, serving as an alternate permanent representative until August 2009.
