The latest figures from the ISL Container Port Monitor indicate that the overall container handling results for the current year are significantly below the expectations from the beginning of the year. Although the handling of all 92 ports covered rose for the second time in a row to 41.6 million TEU/month in June, the figures for the first half of the year are still far below expectations. Compared with June of the previous year, however, this result represents a decline of 4.5%. Moreover, for the 7th time in a row, a negative result was achieved year-on-year. A look at the half-year results also indicates that only a very few regions can achieve a positive annual performance; only the ports of Africa and Latin America will see almost balanced results. However, with market shares of 2.5% and 5.3% respectively, they contribute relatively little to global container handling. The key players in world maritime trade in China, Europe, the USA and the Japan/South Korea/Taiwan region show half-yearly results ranging from -4% (China) to -12% (USA-Pacific).
Additional information on various regions and individual ports are available in our Monthly Container Port Monitor. The latest issue is now available via our web shop. The next issue of the ISL Shipping Statistics and Market Review will focus on the development of seaborne car transport from the same perspective.
