The analysis of container turnover figures in ISL's current Container Port Monitor shows some remarkable developments.
If, for example, the most recent developments in May 2020 are considered (as can be seen in the left figure), a positive development is visible for about half of the regions considered, which represent a market share of about 70 % of the global handling performance: The rate of change compared with the previous month is positive across the board. Handling changes between 0.1 % (South East Asia) and 14.1 % (North Africa) suggest that the bottom of the development has been reached. A worrying exception here are the South American ports, which are still showing handling declines of more than 10 % per month.
At second glance, however, it is noticeable that all positive developments are starting from a very low level. This becomes clear when looking at the year-on-year rates of change, which are almost completely negative for the fourth consecutive month. Across all the 91 ports observed here, there was a decline in handling of more than 7 %. Particularly noteworthy here are the port regions of Europe and North America, which show declines of more than 10 %, in some cases even almost 20 %, compared with May 2019.
