Significant impact of the COVID 19 crisis on the maritime economy

How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected shipping so far? How have countermeasures to combat the virus affected the maritime economy? And what are the forecasts? These and other topics were dealt with on 08 June 2020 in the virtual meeting of the working group Maritime Economy and Infrastructure of the IHK Nord by the participants of the different Chambers of Commerce in the North.

As an impulse, Professor Burkhard Lemper reported on so far known effects in different areas of shipping, ports and shipbuilding on the basis of ISL-own and researched data. For example, the ports in the North have been recording significant declines since April after initially only relatively small losses. According to various market observers, container shipping will decline by at least 10 % and even greater losses are expected for Europe in particular.

At present, almost 12 % of the global container ship fleet is idle and thus out of service. Cruise shipping is completely down and a full return to normal operations is not foreseeable.
