On November 6, 2019, the second Maritime Research Forum of the German Maritime Center (DMZ) took place at the Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg. This year's topic was “Future Fuels, Energy and Propulsion Systems”.

Dr. Peter Tschentscher, First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, opened the event with a speech in which he emphasized that ships are among the most environmentally friendly means of transport, but that it is important to switch to alternative fuels in the future.

In addition to various keynote speeches, the event’s World Café featured a number of research approaches with respect to alternative fuels in the maritime sector. In this context, Dr. Nils Meyer-Larsen (ISL) presented a poster on "Maritime Intermodal Transport Chains - Hydrogen Applications in Truck Hinterland Transportation ", jointly developed with Mr. Claas Schott from the association H2BX - Hydrogen for the Bremerhaven region. The presented topics were intensively and controversially discussed. The participants agreed that the proposed concepts in the field of hydrogen applications should be investigated and validated within R&D projects in the near future.
