Data from the latest ISL Monthly Container Port Monitor (MCPM) show that container traffic in North American ports reached historical highs.
On the West Coast, the port of Los Angeles handled more than one million TEU in a single month for the first time in its history – an increase of 74% when compared with the same month in the crisis year of 2020. However, a significant increase was reached even compared with levels prior to the COVID-19 pandemic: handling in May 2021 exceeded May 2019 levels by 22.1%. Moreover, Long Beach and Vancouver reached new all-time highs with volumes up 58.2% and 39.5%, respectively, compared with pre-crisis levels in May 2019.
East Coast, the ports of New York/New Jersey and Virginia also broke their standing records. With the exception of Montreal, all East Coast ports attained higher volumes than prior to the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2019 – across all ports, container traffic increased by 18.1%.
Due to the extraordinary development of the past months, North America is now the most dynamic region of the past decade. In May, North American ports reached an index value of 161.5 (May 2010-April 2011 = 100), while worldwide and European container handling only reached values of 146.2 and 138.5, respectively.
