On 9 June the World Maritime University (WMU) hosted a Digital Innovation for Smart Shipping Webinar. Digitalization is transforming all aspects of maritime shipping and the webinar presented some of the on-going digital innovation efforts within smart shipping and automation.
The webinar was moderated by Dr Gang Chen, Associate Professor of Port Management and Operations at WMU. Panelists included Dr Khanssa Lagdami, WMU Associate Research Officer, and Dr Zou Gurangrong, Senior Scientist at the Technical Research Centre ( VTT) in Finland.
Dr Chen opened the webinar by introducing a recent innovative application of IoT-based smart maintenance for marine engines, and discussed the opportunities and challenges for further efforts especially in intelligent model development and data sharing between stakeholders. Dr Zou shared insights regarding collaborative digital innovations based on his experience as the coordinator of several large research-industry co-innovation projects. He pointed out that all partners in such projects benefit from collaboration, encouraging companies across the entire maritime value chain to be more proactive and collaborative. Dr Lagdami discussed the potential impacts of advancing technologies on the global shipping labor market noting that many countries do not have long-term plans for supporting technological evolution in the shipping sector. She also highlighted the importance of international collaboration in this regard to ensure a smooth transformation in the global shipping industry.
