U.S. imports boost container shipping

The volume of worldwide container traffic has seemingly defied the Corona pandemic during the past months and kept reaching new record highs. As our Monthly Container Port Monitor shows, Chinese and U.S. ports were particularly dynamic.
Data of selected U.S. ports indicate that this development has been driven by strong US imports: while exports of full containers at the ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and New York were still below the October 2019 volumes, imports of full containers were up 23% year-on-year.

According to market analysts, this development has been driven by strong demand for certain products induced by the pandemic, e.g. home office equipment or face masks. The impact of the crisis on the business cycle will only become relevant in the medium term.
