MAERSK's APM Terminals has reached an agreement with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) to retrain dockers in repairing the automated straddle carriers that will take their jobs in the Port of Los Angeles, reports New York's FreightWaves.
The deal opens the way to install electrical charging stations and to make other upgrades at a 100-acre portion of its Pier 400 site, long the source of the ILWU's objection to the fleet of some 130 automated straddle carriers that arrive in August.
APMT said it "is critical to the continued success of the Port of Los Angeles [and] that the ILWU is trained for the jobs of the future." APMT credited Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti for brokering the deal between the two sides.
