Norway's MPC Container Ships has taken delivery of two 5,500 TEU feeder vessels built in South Korea, reported Melbourne's Baird Maritime.
The Mackenzie and Colorado, constructed by HJ Shipbuilding and Construction, each measure 255 metres in length with a beam of 37.3 metres and a draught of 13.9 metres. Both have a deadweight of 64,300 and gross tonnage of 52,228, with capacity for 850 reefer containers. Propulsion is provided by a MAN-Hyundai 6G80ME-C10.5-HPSCR main engine equipped with selective catalytic reduction to cut NOx emissions. Optimised hull designs are expected to reduce fuel consumption by up to 40 per cent compared with conventional ships. The vessels are designed for future conversion to methanol fuel, which MPCC said could reduce emissions by as much as 90 per cent. Electronics include Furuno radars and satellite communications. Neither ship is fitted with cranes, relying on shore-based infrastructure for loading and unloading, which allows for additional container space. Both are classed by DNV and sail under the Portuguese flag.
The Mackenzie and the Colorado are serving seven-year charters with ZIM Integrated Shipping Services.
