WMU Summer Academy Focuses on Maritime Decarbonization & International Maritime Law
The World Maritime University (WMU) delivered its third annual Summer Academy programme hosted maritime professionals, academics, and students from 22 countries who engaged with distinguished faculty and guest lecturers in the unique international setting provided by WMU.
The WMU Summer Academy course on Maritime Decarbonization was delivered from 19-23 August and is grounded in the belief that maritime decarbonization is both an inevitable shift and a tremendous opportunity for the entire industry. Delivered by a team of WMU faculty and researchers, the course incorporated a holistic approach to maritime decarbonization by looking at regulatory, social, environmental, technological and economic challenges. Content included fundamental international regulations, technical aspects of ship design, future energy technologies including wind and solar power, and looked at the economic mechanisms that determine to a large extent the plausible pathways for decarbonization in the context of supply chain, financing including ports.
The WMU Summer Academy on the International Dimension of Maritime Law & Policy was delivered from 2-6 September and brought esteemed academics and industry experts to teach on the realm of maritime claim in a wider context. The curriculum covered key topics such as ship registration, insurance, cyberthreats, compulsory liability, electronic documents, and the impact of sanctions on shipping. The course was moderated by Sir Nigel Teare, an arbitrator and retired Admiralty Judge on the High Court in the United Kingdom.
