HONG KONG International Airport (HKIA) suffered an 8.1 per cent decline in cargo to 394,000 tonnes in April, mainly due to an 11 per cent drop in imports and 10 per cent fall in transshipments year on year.
According to statistics announced by Airport Authority Hong Kong, which added that among key trading regions, Southeast Asia and Europe saw the big declines.
The airport in its press release said that the cargo traffic remained weak due to uncertain global economic conditions.
The airport's March cargo traffic figures represented a slight growth of 0.2 per cent in cargo traffic.
Cissy Chan, executive director, Commercial of the AA said: "We will develop our cargo strategy in three key areas - e-commerce, transshipments and high-value logistics - while continuing to work closely with our business partners to maintain HKIA's position as the world's leading air cargo hub.?
During the month, HKIA handled 6.5 million passengers, representing year-on-year growth of three per cent, while flight movements increased 0.8 per cent to 35,655 compared to last April.
The growth in passenger volume was largely attributed to the Easter holiday falling in April this year compared to late March last year, which helped drive a 15 per cent year-on-year rise in Hong Kong resident travel. During the month, passenger traffic to and from Taiwan and Europe recorded the most significant increases.
Over the first four months of the year, HKIA handled 25.3 million passengers and 141,355 flight movements, representing year-on-year increases of 2.5 per cent and oneper cent, respectively, while cargo throughput recorded 1.5 million tonnes, a decline of 6.1 per cent compared to the same period last year.
On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume and flight movements grew by 2.2 per cent and 1.2 per cent to 75.3 million and 429,150, respectively, while cargo throughput recorded five million tonnes, a year-on-year decrease of 1.7 per cent.
