DEEPENING works at Damietta Port Authority (DPA) has been completed, enabling the Egyptian port to handle container vessels of up to 14,000 TEU in capacity and 15 metres in draught.
The works deepened the navigational channel to 16 metres and the turning circle and container berths to 15.5 metres.
Captain Tarek Shahin, chairman of the DPA, said that Damietta Port is now at the forefront of ports in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially as it can implement Just-in-time (JIT) operations on ships at the ports, thus eliminating waiting times for vessels.
The port, which is 200km north of Cairo, was the first Egyptian port to introduce the onshore power supply (OPS) technique for providing electric power to berthing vessels, according to London's Container Management.
