Thailand seeks mega ships with empties to move local exports


THAILAND's total containers volume in 2020 decreased 5.49 per cent year on year to 9,574,612 TEU and is making moves to reverse the trend.

Imports fell 4.85 per cent to 4,911,102 TEU in 2020. Exports decreased 6.14 per cent to 4,663, 510 TEU, reports Kiev's Maritime Bulletin.

The Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) has agreed to reduce the port fee for exporters, and also to permit and facilitate ships more than 300-metre long, but not exceeding 400 metres, to enter Laem Chabang deep-sea port to import more empty containers.

As of December 2020, Europe's rates increased by 160 to 220 per cent compared to the previous year, while rates in Asia rose by 17 to 100 per cent. Australian fees increased by 112 to 197 per cent and in the United States they went up 73 to 196 per cent.

Among main problems Thai exporters are facing, are the lack of empty containers and uncontrolled, unpredictable growth of freight rates.

According to new regulation, ships will be able to get a permission, within one day. The ministry also aims to promote and stimulate exports to China via land transport, and will speed up negotiations with Laos, Vietnam and China to facilitate land transport through the borders.

By attracting large containerships to Laem Chabang the port hopes to get more empty containers and fill them with exports for direct calls, skipping transshipment to Singapore, Malaysian ports and Hong Kong, thus, reducing costs.
